Handcrafted Light Fittings – Leinster House

Leinster House in Dublin has been the parliament building of the Republic of Ireland since 1922 and is one of its most important buildings. This beautiful Georgian building is more than 270 years old and in 2019 a £17m renovation programme was completed to restore it for future generations. An important part of this project was to reinstate lighting that is historically appropriate to replace the various fittings that had been added over time and were not suitable either architecturally or aesthetically for this significant building.

Dernier & Hamlyn is one of thefew companies that has the requisite skills and archive to enable it to produce the hand drawn designs and handcrafted light fittings required and we were proud to be asked to contribute to restoring it to its former glory to be enjoyed for years to come.

Working with lighting suppliers NMK Engineering, Dernier & Hamlyn’s London team produced solid brass lanterns fitted with handblown glass panels treated to give period suitable aged effects.

The design of these hexagonal lanterns was based on a black and white photograph from the early 20th century in another part of the building that showed lanterns that had previously hung at Leinster House and inspired updated lighting that combined historic references with energy saving LED lamps.

They have now been installed across some of the most important and frequently visited areas of Leinster House including the imposing entrance hall and sweeping staircase and the colonnade arcade.
